First Post from New Forest William & Mary!

New Forest William and Mary was started during the Spring 2011 semester and is the first student chapter of the non-profit organization New Forest Earth. As a student group we seek to further the mission of New Forest Earth on William and Mary’s campus to “empower indigenous people to preserve and restore their forests through sustainable community development.”

Andon Zebal, a William and Mary alumnus from the Class of 2008 started New Forest Earth in the spring of 2010 with the help of students at the College. New Forest Earth seeks to support sustainable community development in indigenous Latin American communities through a sales partnership to sell their handicrafts in the United States. The overarching goal through this relationship is to help these communities protect their environments through the continuation of their cultures and practices. This will occur through a graduated profit return plan that will help these communities finance a mutually approved project to achieve this goal. NFE is currently partnered with four indigenous communities in Ecuador and Mexico that produce sustainably made products such as jewelry, chocolate, and notebooks.

New Forest Earth started with the plan of expanding to college campuses across the country based on the view that college students hold the idealism and enthusiasm to create a thriving organization. Our student chapter has just begun to prove this with our increasing membership and event organization. Currently, our weekly meetings take place at 7:30 pm on Wednesdays in Blair 201. At meetings we discuss current issues surrounding Latin America, the environment, and sustainability in general. Last semester our events included tabling to sell New Forest products from our partner communities, and participating in awareness events such as the Earth Day Festival. As our chapter expands we hope to provide more events for the campus-wide community and greater Williamsburg area that both spread awareness and fundraise for the NFE cause.

We welcome all new members to our meetings and hope to see you soon! For more information on New Forest Earth check out the website at
